What is the difference between Yazen Change and Yazen Clarity – and when can I switch?
The Change phase usually lasts between 12 and 24 months, depending on your individual progress and medical evaluations. You and your doctor decide together when it is the right time to move forward – but the phase never lasts longer than 24 months.
When can I move to Clarity?
The transition to Yazen Clarity takes place after a medical assessment.
It is important to understand that your goal weight alone does not determine whether you can move forward. In addition to reaching (or being stable close to) your goal weight, other health factors and medical criteria must also be met. You should have a good understanding of the disease, as well as how your own health is influenced by your lifestyle. Over time, the goal is for you to become confident in managing the disease independently to achieve sustainable results. You will always have access to the expert team according to your needs. Obesity (overweight) is a chronic disease, and the challenges of maintaining weight loss and support needs can change over time. The final decision is always made by your responsible doctor based on a comprehensive assessment of:
• Your weight development
• Stability over time
• Any medical parameters
• Your overall health condition
• The need for continued medical follow-up
The transition is therefore not automatic based solely on the number on the scale.
What does Clarity include?
In the Clarity phase, you can choose which parts of the service you want to keep, for example:
• Continued contact with your personal doctor
• Prescription renewal
• Support from your YazenCoach
• Access to the app to track your health data, receive daily tips, and participate in the Community
This gives you greater flexibility to tailor the support to your needs.
What happens with the medication?
When you reach your goal weight, you and your doctor will discuss reducing the medication to a maintenance dose. The goal is to find a maintenance dose that helps you remain weight-stable and avoid weight regain. Currently, there is no research or long-term data supporting complete discontinuation of the medication. Treatment may therefore be lifelong. Yazen follows scientific developments and provides care based on evidence and clinical experience.
If you were previously treated by another provider
If you have received weight-loss medication from another healthcare provider and have already reached – or are close to – your goal weight, you can continue your treatment with Yazen. You will begin in the Change phase, where you and your new doctor create an individual plan for maintaining your results. After an individual assessment, a transition to Clarity may become relevant.
Your journey continues – with a focus on long-term health, stable weight, and sustainable habits.
How does treatment with a dietitian work?
As a patient, you will receive a personal YazenCoach, who is a licensed healthcare professional, such as a nurse, dietitian, or physiotherapist. If you need specific dietary adjustments due to allergies or other reasons, a dietitian can provide you with a tailored nutrition plan. However, all YazenCoaches can support you with a nutritious, filling, and energy-reduced nutrition plan. Your needs determine the level of support.
Who can receive treatment for overweight with us at Yazen?
Anyone between 18 and 75 years of age can download the app and answer our health questions to see if they are eligible for treatment with us.
However, treatment is never offered to people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant within the next two months. We also do not treat people with certain medical conditions, such as type 1 diabetes.
Is it my fault that I am overweight?
No, absolutely not. If you live with overweight, you are far from alone. However, the struggle to lose weight can feel long and lonely. For many people, overweight (BMI above 25) or obesity (overweight) (BMI above 30) affects both physical and mental health, with reduced quality of life and an increased risk of related diseases.
Obesity (overweight) is classified as a disease, yet patients often encounter prejudice and blame. A common belief is that it is about laziness and lack of self-discipline, and that the solution is simple: eat less and move more. The truth is far more complex – genetics, comorbidities and other medical treatments, access to healthy foods, economic circumstances, life situation and biological survival mechanisms, hormones and more all play a role and can counteract weight loss.
Yo-yo dieting and repeated diets have become part of life for many people. Weight loss is often temporary, and the statistics are unfortunately discouraging. 8 out of 10 people with obesity (overweight) who previously lost weight are unable to maintain the weight loss.
Can you eat normally during the treatment?
It depends on what “eating normally” means for you. A calorie deficit is required to lose weight, even with medication.
The most important thing is to eat less and listen to your body’s signals of satiety. It is important to eat nutritious foods to avoid nutrient deficiencies. You can receive support from your YazenCoach if you need help planning your diet. We do not prohibit any specific foods. The dietary plan should be sustainable and suited to your lifestyle and financial situation.
To avoid side effects from modern appetite-regulating medications, it may be necessary to be cautious with fatty foods, strong spices, and large meal portions. By starting carefully with a low dose and an adapted diet, many people can partially avoid side effects. The team will guide you.
I am going through menopause – can I undergo the Yazen treatment?
Yes.
Many women experience weight gain during this hormonally changing phase of life, often combined with age-related and social factors.
The treatment may help support weight loss while also providing guidance in managing certain menopause-related symptoms – while offering structured support to help you reach your health and weight goals.
High BMI – why does it matter?
A BMI value that corresponds to overweight does not necessarily imply health risks on its own. If you are well trained and have a higher amount of muscle mass, this provides many health benefits even if you weigh more than what is considered normal weight. However, a high proportion of body fat, especially when located around the internal organs in the abdomen (abdominal fat), increases the risk of health problems and certain diseases.
Abdominal fat is associated with a number of health risks, while fat located on the hips and thighs usually has less impact on health. Diseases and conditions related to metabolism are most affected by body weight and waist circumference. This includes conditions such as cardiovascular disease like high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol and other blood lipid disorders, insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, as well as pain in the back, knees, and other joints.
These symptoms are collectively referred to as metabolic syndrome because they are related to metabolism. Overweight and obesity also increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
How you can improve your BMI
By combining healthy dietary habits, regular physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle changes, you can move your BMI in a positive direction. This is not about quick fixes or temporary diets, but about long-term habits that support a stable and healthy weight.
A balanced diet that focuses on nutrient-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein sources, and healthy fats helps the body receive the right energy and nutrients. Reducing the intake of sugar, ultra-processed foods, and large portion sizes can also contribute to better weight balance.
Regular physical activity – such as walking, strength training, cycling, or other forms of exercise you enjoy – increases energy expenditure, strengthens muscles, and improves metabolism. Everyday movement, such as taking the stairs or walking shorter distances, also makes a difference over time.
For many people, factors such as sleep, stress management, and consistent daily routines are also important for achieving and maintaining a healthy BMI. Small, consistent changes over time often lead to better and more sustainable results than drastic measures.
I am breastfeeding – can I undergo the Yazen treatment?
For women who are breastfeeding, the treatment is therefore unfortunately not appropriate.
This is because the active substances in the medication may pass through breast milk and reach the child.
For safety reasons, it is therefore recommended that treatment is only started after breastfeeding has ended.
I have lipedema – can I undergo the Yazen treatment?
Absolutely! Even with lipedema, you can receive treatment at Yazen.
Although there is currently no curative treatment for lipedema, slow and steady weight loss with the help of injection treatment may help reduce pain and the feeling of heaviness.
Yazen offers support through weight-loss injections as well as guidance on nutrition and lifestyle. However, it is always important to consult your treating physician before starting a new treatment program.
Who can receive medication for overweight?
Today, several medications are approved for the treatment of overweight in adults.
Medication treatment is recommended for obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or for overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) if complications or risk factors are present at the same time. Examples include high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids, high blood sugar, atherosclerosis, or sleep apnea.
Medications may also be used to maintain achieved weight loss, for example in people who previously had severe overweight and lost weight through dietary changes or after weight-loss surgery, such as gastric bypass surgery.
All licensed physicians who treat patients with overweight have the right to prescribe approved medications for the disease obesity (overweight). The responsible physician always makes the individual medical assessment to ensure that the treatment is appropriate and provided in accordance with scientific evidence and established clinical practice.
Why BMI does not give the full picture of your health
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure used to estimate a person’s body fat and assess whether their weight falls within a healthy range. It is calculated by dividing body weight (in kilograms) by height (in meters) squared.
However, the BMI index does not say much about your body composition or what your weight consists of, and a higher BMI does not automatically mean a health risk. A body with a large amount of muscle (high muscle mass) will receive a higher value, and the same applies if a person has a healthy weight but is relatively short. BMI can therefore be a way to get an idea of what may be an appropriate body weight for you, but it does not have a direct connection to your body fat percentage or the proportion of muscle mass. Even if you are considered to have obesity (overweight) according to BMI, your body and weight may be healthier than the numbers suggest. To gain a more accurate picture of a person’s health and risk profile related to body composition – meaning the amount of muscle and fat and where the fat is located in the body – additional measurement methods are required.
A BMI value that corresponds to overweight does not necessarily imply health risks on its own. If you are well trained and have a higher amount of muscle mass, this has many health benefits even if you weigh more than what is considered normal weight. However, a high proportion of body fat, especially if it is located around the internal organs in the abdomen (abdominal fat), increases the risk of health problems and certain diseases.
I have a thyroid disorder – can I undergo the Yazen treatment?
Yes. Inform your doctor about your medical history and which medications you are taking.
If you have recently been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, it is important that it has been medically evaluated and stabilized, and that you consult your treating physician before starting a new treatment program.
How long does it take to lose weight with Yazen’s treatment?
The rate of weight loss is individual and depends on several factors. Each person’s circumstances and starting point are different.
The treatment team aims to support you as a patient in losing 5 % of your body weight during the first 12 weeks, while of course listening to you and your preferences. Our internal follow-up shows that our patients reach an average weight loss of 5 % within 70 days, and on a group level our patients achieve 16 % to 18 % weight loss over 12 months. How long it takes for you to reach your target weight or a healthy target weight is naturally individual.
Your coach and doctor tailor the treatment to you, ensuring a healthy rate of weight loss where behavior change and lifestyle change are just as important as medical support with medication, for sustainable results.
We have experience helping more than 50,000 patients lose weight and maintain a healthy target weight. Modern medications provide revolutionary conditions for maintaining an energy deficit to support weight loss.
For your weight journey to be sustainable for life, medication combined with lifestyle changes is crucial. We are here to support you throughout your weight journey.
What does my YazenCoach do?
Your YazenCoach is a licensed nurse, dietitian, or physiotherapist with experience in obesity treatment.
Your YazenCoach provides you with personal support throughout your weight journey, tailored to your individual needs. You receive support in implementing behaviour changes. You can get help planning a calorie deficit based on your needs. Your coach also supports you if you face challenges, whether related to diet, physical activity, or mental well-being.
I have PCOS, can I undergo treatment with Yazen?
In cases of overweight and obesity, weight loss with medical treatment is an important treatment option for PCOS. It can contribute to improved hormonal balance, reduced inflammation, fewer symptoms, and an increased chance of pregnancy.
I have previously undergone a gastric bypass surgery. Does your treatment work for me?
We treat many patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery.
Regaining weight after such surgery can feel even more shameful than the first time for many people, but the same biological and external mechanisms are responsible for weight gain both before and after surgery. This is about genetics and environmental factors, not personal failure. Yazen’s treatment is designed to help you regardless of your medical history.
Obesity is a complex and chronic disease, which explains why weight regain can occur after weight loss following surgery. You are not alone in this. It is not your fault. The disease has a complex causal model, and we have experience helping individuals achieve and maintain weight loss.
What do you do if someone does not lose enough weight or loses weight too slowly?
If you, as a patient, do not reach your goals, your team is there to explore potential obstacles together with you.
You receive continuous support, tailored to your needs. Challenges or setbacks during a weight journey are not uncommon. The treatment is likely to be long-term, and it is natural to experience periods that are more challenging.
Your team has experience in helping individuals with obesity overcome existing barriers. There are described cases in which individuals do not achieve the desired effect from modern appetite-regulating medications, but in our experience this is very rare.
What happens when I have reached a healthy target weight?
When you have reached a healthy target weight, you begin determining a maintenance dose. This is the dose of medication you need to remain weight stable, i.e. to stay in energy balance. The maintenance dose is your medical support to prevent weight regain. Research shows that individuals who stop taking medication tend to regain weight. At present, we do not know how long each individual will need to continue medication – for many, it may potentially be lifelong.
Which medications does Yazen use for weight loss?
Your doctor most often prescribes modern appetite-regulating medications, known as GLP-1/GIP analogues.
The doctor always makes an individual assessment. There are several approved medications that may be appropriate.
What is Yazen?
Yazen is a digital healthcare service that helps people living with overweight or obesity achieve more sustainable health. You get access to a medical team, individually tailored guidance, support for lifestyle changes, and medical treatment when needed. The goal is to provide safe, evidence-based, and long-term support without guilt or shame.
How does treatment for overweight affect my other medications?
The medication causes delayed gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of, for example, oral contraceptives in the stomach. Therefore, we recommend barrier contraception, such as condoms, to prevent unintended pregnancy. You should not become pregnant during ongoing treatment with GLP-1/GIP analogues.
If you have diabetes and are treated with insulin, GLP-1 analogues may cause low blood sugar levels. We do not treat individuals with diabetes who are on insulin therapy or older so-called SU medications due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking. Your doctor is responsible for assessing whether you can use modern appetite-regulating medications in a patient-safe manner.
Do I need to take obesity medication for the rest of my life?
Obesity is a chronic and complex disease. Research shows that individuals who stop taking medication tend to regain weight. The theory behind this is that there is a so-called “set point” in the brain, which acts like a thermostat in the hypothalamus and monitors body weight. When you lose weight, this thermostat increases hunger and appetite in order to restore the weight to the higher level you previously had.
From an evolutionary perspective, humans are adapted to avoid starvation and survive in a very different environment than the one we often live in today. The reasons why an individual develops obesity are multifactorial, and therefore the measures required to lose weight and maintain weight loss vary from person to person.
We advise patients not to stop taking medication once they have reached their target weight. Instead, we recommend trying a lower dose, known as a maintenance dose, which helps prevent weight regain. More research is needed before we know who may be able to discontinue medication a certain number of years after achieving stable weight at a healthy level.
What tests are taken before treatment?
Before you begin your treatment with us, we conduct a thorough medical assessment through a number of selected blood tests. This allows us to tailor your treatment and monitor your health in the best possible way.
We focus on the values that are most important in medical weight loss:
Blood sugar and metabolism
We measure your fasting glucose and your long-term blood sugar (HbA1c). These tests show how your body handles sugar and provide us with an overview of your metabolic health. It is very common for these values to improve as you lose weight.
Blood fats and heart health
We check your blood lipids, including cholesterol and triglycerides. A healthy balance of blood fats is important for the heart and blood vessels. During weight loss we often see a positive effect on harmful blood fats.
Liver and kidneys
We check values for both the liver (ALAT and GT) and the kidneys (creatinine and eGFR). This helps us ensure that your internal organs are functioning properly before and during treatment. Previously elevated liver values, which are often caused by fatty liver associated with overweight, usually improve as weight decreases.
Blood values (Blood count)
We also review your general blood count, including hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cells and platelets. This gives us a good overall picture of your health.
Before your blood test
To obtain the most accurate results possible, it is important that you are fasting when you take your tests. This means you should not eat or drink anything (except water).
You will find more information about where and how to take your tests directly in the Yazen app. There you can also communicate with your care team if you have questions about your results.
Can you cancel your subscription at any time?
At Yazen, there are two different subscriptions: Change and Clarity.
For Change, you can choose a binding period of 1, 6, or 12 months. The subscription can only be cancelled once the binding period has ended, and you must always speak with your doctor before cancellation, as the doctor is responsible for your treatment.
In addition, Yazen’s prescription policy applies. This means that each time you are prescribed medication, you commit to remaining in the service for the entire treatment period for that medication. This corresponds to 4 weeks per pen or package – regardless of the binding period of your subscription. The reason is that GLP-1 medications require careful dosing, monitoring of effects and side effects, and medical planning. For patient safety reasons, we therefore cannot end your membership immediately after a prescription has been issued.
For Clarity, the prescription policy does not apply. Here, cancellation is governed solely by the binding period of each service:
Yazen app: no binding period
Prescription renewal: 3-month binding period
Coaching support: 1-month binding period
Personal physician: 3-month binding period
How does payment work?
We use Stripe as our payment service to manage subscriptions. You can easily pay with your debit or credit card, and depending on the country, you may also be able to choose other payment options. The subscription is charged one month in advance. Payment is automatically deducted each month on the same date as your first payment.
For example, if you paid on September 26, the next payment will be charged on October 26. If you wish to change the payment date, you are welcome to contact our support team.
We also offer the option to pay a one-time amount for either a 6- or 12-month subscription via Klarna. For ongoing monthly payments, card payment via Stripe is used.
Do I get a diet and training plan?
During treatment, you receive support tailored to your needs from your YazenCoach.
If needed, the coach can also help you with individually tailored diet and training guidance, so that you reach your goals in a sustainable way.
What is included in the subscription?
We strive for full transparency regarding our costs. Subscriptions and medication are paid separately, and medication is not included in the subscription fee.
Blood tests included in Change are covered by the subscription price. For Clarity, blood tests may be performed when needed but are not included in the subscription fee.
How do medications for medical weight loss work?
The medication works both locally in the stomach and centrally in the brain. It affects satiety, hunger, and appetite through several mechanisms, both directly and indirectly.
The stomach empties more slowly, which leads to an earlier feeling of fullness when you eat. You feel satisfied sooner and eat smaller portions.
In the brain, the medication influences several processes that together reduce hunger and cravings while increasing satiety and lowering appetite. Some patients describe that a so-called “food noise” becomes quieter. They experience thinking about food less than before, which makes it easier not to eat more than needed.
How does medical weight loss affect diet, can I eat as usual?
The goal of the treatment is for you to plan your diet so that it is well-balanced, nutritious, filling, and low in energy in order to achieve an energy deficit.
Energy deficit = calorie deficit is a prerequisite for weight loss.
How, what, and when you eat during the day can also affect whether you experience side effects. If you have questions about how to plan your meals, seek support from your coach.
What risks and side effects can be experienced from the medication?
Side effects are usually few, mild, and temporary. The most common side effects affect the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea, gas, abdominal discomfort, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea.
Side effects can often be avoided by starting treatment at a low dose and by adjusting meal content and portion size. Always inform your doctor or coach if you experience side effects so that you can receive advice and support.
